This might be your reality
5 days, 4 people, 3 bedrooms, 2 generations, 1 living room, zero communication. 5 days a week, the 4 inhabitants of this 3 bedroom HDB flat lead completely different lives. (No one comes home during weekends). The 2 generations under the same roof each live in their own world and make an effort to keep it that way. In that one living room shared by all, it is almost an offence to cross each other’s space. Little or no communication completes the family portrait.
SHE studies. And studies. And she gets her As. Solely believing that schoolwork is the only love of her life, she plunges into an abyss of formulae and language everyday, coming up for air only during mealtimes. At home, she is blind to the needs of her family. She never takes sides during quarrels, preferring instead, to ignore or avoid the situation. This 14 year old is the youngest in the family.
FOUR years older than her sister, this girl takes everything for granted. She never goes anywhere without her Ipod Nano. With headphones constantly plugged into her ears, it is no wonder that she is deaf to the advice of her mother. Her next best hobby is boy-courting. Most wonder how her boyfriend of 2 years can be with her for so long.
PERHAPS the most good-natured in the family, Mother is a fulltime homemaker. Her life revolves around 2 Cs– cooking and cleaning. Like all mothers, she believes in providing only the best for her husband and children. This one is especially naggy.
THE father is a businessman. Earning money is number one, family is number two… or probably not on his agenda at all. To him, the family is Mother’s responsibility. Reading the newspapers and the daily mail is sacred to him. No one should ever attempt to intrude. Father has a short fuse. Most of the time, he is pretty unreasonable.
